COVID-19 Q&A - 4/23/2020
Can I bring instrument in for repair?
Currently we are not taking any new repairs in because the instruments could be contaminated. We are working with industry professionals including
chemical companies and researching health organization recommendations to develop a safe way to thoroughly clean and disinfect instruments. We are also recommending that schools hold off on
collecting instruments from students, but if you need to, we recommend not mixing them with instruments that have been left at school. There is a good chance that instruments that have been left at
the schools are not infected and the longer they stay quarantined the safer they will be.
When will JKEAA Music re-open for repairs?
Based on the timeline currently set by the state, we will not be open until mid-June. We are hoping that we will have our new mobile shop up and
running around that time. This will eliminate transferring potentially contaminated instrument to our shop and cross contaminating none infected instrument at the shop or in the transfer
Does the instrument cleaning chemicals kill the COVID-19 virus?
Currently, the chemicals used for cleaning instruments are not rated to kill the COVID-19 virus. We are working with our chemical company who is
working with the EPA to see if any of their current chemicals can be certified to kill the COVID-19 virus and still be safe for musical instruments. We hope to get an answer soon, but they are mostly
focused on medical equipment, which is the highest priority right now.
What procedures are being researched by JKEAA Music?
- How to safely collect and quarantine instruments.
- How to keep our staff safe while disinfecting the instruments.
- How to disinfect instrument cases.
- How to disinfect Woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments.
- How to disinfect our mobile shop.
What repairs will JKEAA Music be doing when they re-open?
Currently we are planning on focusing on cleaning and disinfecting instruments. Due to the high demand we may not have time for general repairs
until all the instruments have been cleaned.
What will be involved in the cleaning process?
Currently we are planning on level 3 cleanings on all instruments with an extra disinfectant process added to it. This would mean all instrument
will have to be completely torn down, the non-wood bodies dipped, all keys without pads dipped, all keys with pads be hand cleaned, all cases be disinfected and the instrument
